Tournament day is here β and you are ready. π
If you've been following along, you've already done the hard part. In Part 1 we talked about practicing at tournament speed and finding groups to play with beforehand. In Part 2 we covered what to read, how to sharpen your card skills, and why playing with new people before tournament day makes all the difference.
Now? You're on your way. Let's make sure you've got everything you need. π
π What to Expect on Tournament Day
First things first: tournaments are more relaxed than you think. Here's what a typical day actually looks like so nothing catches you off guard.
Registration & Check-In
You'll check in at a registration table when you arrive β have your NMJL card ready (the one we mentioned in Part 2). You'll get your table assignment and round schedule. Arrive 15β20 minutes early if you can. The room fills up fast and first-timers who rush in stressed are already at a disadvantage before a tile is touched.
How Rounds Work
Most American Mahjong tournaments run 6β8 rounds over the course of a day. Each round is timed β typically 50-55 minutes β and you'll play four rounds.
Tables & Seating
You'll rotate tables between rounds so you play with different people throughout the day. This is one of my favorite things about tournaments β you meet players from all over. If you want to find local games to practice with new faces before tournament day, The Parlor Club lists mahjong events and drop-in games near you.
Scoring
Scoring follows NMJL rules, that said, each tournament organizer can add their own small nuances. Points are tracked per hand and totaled at the end of the tournament. Don't stress about the math β tournament organizers and table scorers ('the Easts') will handle it. Your job is to play your best hand and enjoy the game.
The Vibe
Competitive, yes β but genuinely warm. The mahjong community draws people who love the game and love the people it brings together. First-timers are welcomed, not intimidated. If you're unsure about a rule during play, ask β it's always better than guessing. And if you're still building your confidence, our Part 1 guide is a good place to start.
π What To Bring
Let's avoid the last-minute scramble.
Tournament Essentials:
- π Your NMJL card (write your name + mobile number on the back)
- π Reading glasses if needed
- π§ Water bottle
- π Light snacks (between games only)
- π Portable charger
- π§₯ A sweater or layer (because every ballroom is legally required to be freezing π)
Optional but emotionally supportive:
- β¨ Lucky charm
- β¨ Lip gloss
- β¨ Your funniest Mahj friend
π Honestlyβ¦
The best thing you can do before your first Mahjongg tournament? Prepare enough that you feel comfortable β but not so much that you completely stress yourself out trying to be "perfect."
You are absolutely not expected to walk in knowing everything. Every experienced tournament player was once the nervous newbie walking into their first round too.
And besides β you now have your tournament prep plan in place, resources like The Parlor Club at your fingertips, and me cheering you on from the sidelines.
You've Got This! πβ¨
This is Part 3 of a three-part series on preparing for your first Mahjongg tournament. Start from the beginning with Part 1, or catch up with Part 2.
